NS,

Nobody seems to be picking up on the fact that after Haller nodded the ball on to Snodgrass the latter attempted to flick the ball over Egan who raised his arm and deflected the ball into the path of Rice (and it was then Egan who headed the ball onto Rice's arm).

The ref was about 8 yards away and must have seen the original handball but presumably played the advantage...

And Rice did his job by getting his body across him. He can’t put his hands behind his back.

You could say the defenders header was poor and he’s headed it into Rice.

Re: ⚽ Sheff Utd v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Dean Ashton had an interesting take on the handball incident... said the Sheffield Utd defender had done his job with a clearing header... and it had been stopped by Rice's hand... so although harsh it was the correct decision... have to be honest as soon as you saw it in slow motion last night it was guaranteed to get over turned with what had been going on this season...

simon s.

"VAR wasn’t the main problem though. It’s just there to spot a ridiculous rule that was probably set up by clowns who’ve never played the game. Said on the radio that the rule is due to be reviewed, and if there is any sense it will go back to what it was before."

Funnily enough simon I emailed the IFAB this morning stating that the handball rule 'seems to have been created by someone with little understanding of the dynamics of open play in football.'

I received a very prompt response from former top ref David Elleray who said -
"The current wording for handball was produced by a panel of current and former players, coaches and referees for (sp. from?) across the world and, in general, is well received, although there will always be some marginal situations which may disappoint people."

Agree we would have gone down by many but that’s mainly due to Fabianski unfortunately he’s now injured.

As much as we were shit last night, I can't help thinking if Pellegrini had been in charge we would have lost 4 nil, as our lot just wouldn't have fancied a cold, Friday night match in that shit hole called Sheffield!

Went there a few months back for an 'evening with Paolo Di Canio', fuck me Sheffield city centre leaves a lot to be desired!

The Law Makers are slowly but surely losing sight of what football is all about and that's goals. The offside law as it stands with the implementation of VAR chalks off plenty of goals. Accidental handball in an attacking sense = no goal. Accidental handball by a defender = no penalty = no goal. All three = Less goals.

The irony is if handball was still like last year where a handball had to be deemed deliberate then VAR would be a great tool. Past disgraces such as Maradona or Henry would be justifiably chalked off but last nights was just a prime example of how wrong the new rule is. As far as I can remember not one Sheffield United player claimed for a handball (I may be wrong).

Likewise with offside. With VAR now in place if the "daylight" rule was brought back in VAR would a good tool because it would clearly show daylight rather than a toe or finger!!

Re: ⚽ Sheff Utd v West Ham - Official Match Thread
If we see one single inconsistent application of the accidental handball rule that leads to a goal, and they let that goal stand, we should sue the FA for game manipulation.

That decision could have us bottom three by tomorrow and cost us dearly.

Re: ⚽ Sheff Utd v West Ham - Official Match Thread
So an attacking cannot handle the ball accidentally to score a goal, but a defender can handle it accidentally and prevent a goal/not concede a penalty.

VARs not the issue here, they've made a complete mess of the rules

One Mac. It’s already happened that way with Liverpool this season.

You can call it paranoid if you like but it’s still all subjective decisions with handball and foul play and it’s not being applied consistently across the division. That’s an undeniable fact. Only offside is now 100% objectively applied with VAR.

Would Liverpool have got the penalty decision we were denied against Southampton as well? One Hundred Percent every day of the week.

Until we get reinforcements in key positions, any manager will have trouble getting consistent results our of that squad. It’s been neglected season after season and we’ve instead often misspent whatever was made available on players who aren’t up to it or we don’t need.
Doesn’t seem like we’re about to either, so relegation remains a real possibility

Re: ⚽ Sheff Utd v West Ham - Official Match Thread
VAR isn't a problem in general but the bigger issue is what it's being used for.
Stupid marginal offsides which offer no advantage or cannot even be 100% accurate, handballs that just aren't avoidable. All this whilst diving, the grabbing and fouling at set plays is totally dismissed and ignored.
Lost count of the penalties we should have had, those that should be given against us and the lack of clamping down on obvious simulation.

VAR wasn't the deciding factor yesterday as some of our 'better' players wasted opportunities due to poor finishing or decision making.
If you don't punish mistakes then you don't get anything. They punished ours, should have had a second (good stop by Martin).

Our football isn't pretty, we have a weak midfield which needs addressing and the goal keeping department is a concern. January is an opportunity to help address some of those gaps so I hope some decent business is done.

Bloody hell. I just saw the ‘handball’.

What a ridiculous decision. What on Earth can he do about that? If that’s coming off a Liverpool or Man U arm then it’s never going to be disallowed.

Lertie,

A training goalkeeper to me is like one of them cardboard cut out players, used for defensive walls etc.

And MESSAGE TO DAVID MOYES:

You always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have a substitute forward on the bench.

ALWAYS.

You have seven substitutes available to you in any Premier League game. Seven.

I don't care if you have to drag a sixteeen year old out of the youth set up to fill the spot. Never, ever go into games without an extra forward as an option.

We desperately need to sign a striker. If Haller gets injured we are royally fucked.
